My First Table

For my first project I decided to go with something simple... a coffee table!
One idea I was really eager to try was tiling a table top. I was inspired to try this after my recent trip to Mexico with my Mom and Sister, where I saw a beautiful solid wood table in a restaurant which had ornate tiles covering the top. I gave the table a good look and decided it probably wouldn’t be that hard to re-create back home! So that was my plan for the first project - to create a Mexican inspired piece which was colourful and different.

First I found the coffee table in our local Value Village for $29.99. A little steep considering where I found it, but it had loads of character and I had to get it.

Next I looked through all the paint I had downstairs to decide what colours to make it. I settle on a beautiful Blue and Yellow I had in Pittsburgh Kitchen and Bath Semi-Gloss (if I didn’t mention before, I work in a Paint department, so I have an abundance of paint, to my boyfriends dismay).

After giving the table a light sanding to dull the finish, I covered it in 2 coats of Sico Primer. Then 2 coats of the blue paint. The yellow inlays needed 3 or 4 coats (yellow is tricky that way).

And now came my hunt for the perfect tiles. As you can imagine, living in Nova Scotia you don't come across Mexican tiles without special ordering them, which = $$.  So I had to get creative! After purchasing 25 tiles from Happy Harry’s at 20 cents a piece (only $5!), I found Mexican tile designs online and printed them off with a standard colour printer. Then I used my new favourite product Mod Podge to decoupage them onto the tile. This was SUPER easy! For instructions on decoupage tile click the link.

SO, then came the tiling! This has proved to be a far more complex project then I first thought. Luckily I had my Mom's boyfriend Paul help me out and explain how things are done, he's great to have around! For tips on tiling refer to the link.

Finally the Table was done! It looks just how I wanted it and is ready to sell!
